A Blessed Life

A good life is when you realize how blessed you are for what you  have.

Recently I came across this Facebook status from someone who uploaded a picture of his new gadget with a caption of  'feeling blessed'. I can't help but think. Does material things make someone feel blessed?

I have nothing against people who labeled material stuff as a blessing. But before using the phrase 'feeling blessed' in your next status take time to read  my post first. It makes sense to find out first what does blessed mean. We talked about 'blessing' a lot but have you ever stopped and ask what does it really mean?

What does it mean to be blessed?

According to the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, The Greek word for blessed is 'makarios'. In ancient Greek times, makarios referred  to the Gods. The blessed ones were the Gods. To be blessed, you must to be a God.

When this word, makarios was used in the Greek translation of the Old Testament, it took on another meaning. It referred to the result of right living or righteousness. If you lived right, you were blessed. To be blessed, you had to have big and beautiful things.

In the bible there is no any hint that Jesus talks about material fortune as a form of blessing. However Jesus never said that money or wealth was bad. Instead he said "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God."(Luke 18:24, Matt 19:23, Mark 10:23). He encourages us to consider what money does to humanity.

Blessed are those who follow the Righteous Word:

Blessed are those who are strong in the Spirit.
Blessed are those who confide in the Truth.
Blessed are those who seek righteousness.
Blessed are those who feed the hungry.
Blessed are those who comfort those who mourn.
Blessed are those who bring joy to those in sorrow.
Blessed are those who make peace.
Blessed are those who are merciful.
Blessed are those who have a forgiving heart.
Blessed are those who hear and obey the Word of the Lord.
Blessed are those who help the weak and needy.
Blessed are those who are humble and upright.
Blessed are those who are gracious and show compassion.
Blessed are those who rise above all impurities.
Blessed are those who distinguish between right and wrong.
Many have seen blessing as being well off, comfortable and lucky. But  being blessed is not necessarily mean having a good fortune. We often say  'I am very blessed ' 'Feeling blessed' or 'Incredibly blessed' every time we received an earthly gifts such as fame, wealth or comfort.
But what happens if you are in an opposite situation where good fortune is not in favor of you? Will you still feel blessed?
In my own perspective, To be blessed is to have God's word working in your life even in the time of adversity. To live a blessed life is to stay positive despite of misfortune and unexpected circumstances.
With or without  the material wealth on earth, we are blessed because of spiritual blessings that far outweigh any earthly blessings. For the Glory of God, we are truly blessed.

Thank you for taking time to read. Let us be a blessing to one another.
